How to apply for the CASOS Ph.D. program

CASOS Ph.D. program is a multi-disciplinary university wide program that interacts synergistically with existing graduate programs.
To be Admitted to CASOS you must first be admitted to one of the following departments. Click on the name of a department to access information and application material. Please visit the department websites to get information and application packages. Note, once admitted to CMU you can join CASOS at any point in time.

CASOS students work with and take classes from CASOS faculty in any of the departments. See the required classes for each department.

Steps to take when you apply:

  1. Apply to one or more of the departments listed above. If you are not sure which department (or departments) to apply to either contact Kathleen M. Carley regarding COS and EPP, David Krackhardt regarding Heinz. Note on each and every application form and in a cover letter that you wish to be associated with CASOS.
  2. Send email to Dr. Kathleen M. Carley telling her that you have applied to CMU for a Ph.D and are interested in being associated with CASOS. Also list all departments at CMU that you have applied to and rank order them.
  3. After you have been admitted to CMU, send a second email to Dr. Kathleen M. Carley telling her that you have been admitted and to what program. At that point, you will be admitted to CASOS.
  4. Set up an appointment with the Lab Manager, Janice Kusmierek, to get your picture taken and registered into CASOS .
