Abstract
Organizations can and do adapt to their environment. It is often suggested that high performance organizations are those that learn how to learn. This metalearning is often interpreted as acquiring skills, personnel and technology that increase the likelihood that the organization will be able to take advantage of new opportunities when they arise. In contrast, we argue that meta learning involves not just acquiring "the right stuff" but also developing the right change strategies. In order to achieve high performance, organizations need to learn strategies for when and how to change and when to take risks. However, such strategies are not necessarily transferable across organizations.
