  • Congratulations to CASOS Graduate student Wei Wei sucessfully defended his PhD Thesis Probabilistic Models of Topics and Social Events. Wei Wei is now working at Google.
  • The 2017 SBP-BRiMS Conference will be July 10th through 13th at George Washington University in Washington, DC. Updates will be posted on the conference website www.sbp-brims.org.
  • On Friday December 2, CASOS Director Kathleen M. Carley will visit the Geography Department at Penn State about Dynamic Network Analysis and big data. The lecture will begin at 4pm. For information about the talk visit: here.

  • CASOS Director Kathleen M. Carley has been invited to give a seminar entitled Changing Networks due to Terms, Twitter and Threats at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign on November 10th.

  • Kathleen M. Carley will be giving a keynote speech at the PRO-VE 2016 Conference in Porto Portugal October 3-5. The keynote will be entitled Dynamic Networks in a Cyber-Mediated World. Information on the conference can be found at http://www.pro-ve.org
  • September 2016

  • CASOS Director Kathleen M. Carley will be participating in the Future Directions in Network Science Workshop September 29-30 in Arlington, VA. This invitation only workshop hosted by Northeastern University with support from the Office of the Secretary of Defense to discuss and assess the current state of network science, future development, and identify challenges and applications of network-based tools.
  • Saturday September 24th, CASOS Center Director Kathleen M. Carley will be giving a talk at the Symposium on Frontiers in Big Data at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Details regarding the symposium and information on her keynote can be found here.
  • Ghita Mezzour and CASOS Director Kathleen M. Carley received a PEER award for “Using Data Science for Improved Education and Employability in Morocco." The Partnership for Enhanced Engagement in Research (PEER) is a program of the National Academies of Sciences (NAS). Ghita is a former CASOS PhD student and is now faculty member in Morocco.

  • CMU Prof. Kathleen M. Carley will be giving a keynote on Friday July 29th for the IEEE 17th International Conference on Information Reuse and Integration being hosted by the University of Pittsburgh and being held in Pittsburgh July 28th-30th (IEEE IRI 2016). Her Keynote will be on “Tracking Dynamic Networks: Data Challenges for Real World Applications”. Abstract and conference details can be found at the conference website.

  • CASOS Graduate Student Kenneth Joseph successfully defended his PhD Thesis New methods for large-scale analyses of social identities and stereotypes.
  • SBP-BRiMS Conference in Washington DC will be June 28th through July 1st. CASOS faculty and students will be giving tutorials and presenting at the international conference.

  • Michael Lanham and Will Frankenstein will be hooded at the CMU PhD hooding ceremony on Saturday May 14, 2016 and receive their diplomas at the graduation on May 15, 2016.
  • CMU CASOS will be giving three tutorials at the SBP-BRiMS 2016 meeting in Washington DC on June 28. These tutorials are open to anyone who wishes to register. Note you can register just for tutorials. Or you can register for just the conference. Or you can register for both.

  • CASOS Director Kathleen M. Carley presented Dynamic Network Analysis of Social Media Data, at the New Trends in Social Media, NATO Strategic Communications Centre of Excellence Stratcom, Riga Latvia. She also presented Social Media Network Analytics, at the NATO ACT-Sprint Conference, Krackow, Poland.
  • Mr. William Frankenstein will receive his PhD in the CMU ceremony this year. He will join Deloitte & Touche after graduation. He earned his PhD from Carnegie Mellon University under Dr. Kathleen M. Carley at the Center for Computation Analysis for Social and Organizational Systems (CASOS) from the Engineering and Public Policy Department in the Carnegie Institute of Technology college. His current research interests are in the area of nuclear deterrence and social media policy.
  • LTC Michael Lanham, will receive his PhD in the CMU ceremony this year. He is now a faculty member at USMA (WestPoint)and an Assistant Professor of Computer Science in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. Michael is also an Academy Professor and Director of the Cyber Research Center (CRC). He earned his PhD from Carnegie Mellon University under Dr. Kathleen M. Carley at the Center for Computation Analysis for Social and Organizational Systems (CASOS) in the School of Computer Science and the Institute of Software Research. LTC Lanham is an Infantry officer who served with 3rd ID(Mech) in Germany and with the 101st ABN DIV(AASLT). He earned is BS degrees from North Carolina State University in Computer Engineering and Computer Science and his MS degree in Computer Science from the University of Florida. Michael served as a Functional Area 53 Information Systems Management officer before becoming an Academy Professor. He has taught Computer Science and Information Technology at University of Florida and the US Military Academy. He has served as a Branch Chief in US Strategic Command's System Certification (J65) Division, a Technical Manager (J35) and Deputy CIO at the Joint Functional Component Command Integrated Missile Defense, a CNO planner at JFCC Network Warfare, the Information Assurance Program Manager at United States Army Central, and an operations planner at Army Forces Cyber and Army Strategic Command. His current research interests are focused on expanding his work on organizational resilience to cyber attacks from his dissertation entitled, "Rapid Mission Assurance Modeling via Socio-technical Modeling and Simulation."

  • CASOS Center graduate students Kenneth Joseph and Wei Wei have been selected to receive graduate Student Assembly/Provost Conference Funds. The goal of this funding is to enable more Carnegie Mellon graduate students to either attend or make presentations at key conferences in their fields.

  • CASOS Center will be giving a training session on using ORA at the 2016 INSNA Sunbelt Conference. Center Director Kathleen M. Carley, Faculty L. Richard Carley and graduate students Kenneth Joseph and Larry LIN Jun Jie will also be giving talks at the conference.
  • CASOS graduate student William Frankenstein will receive the 2016 Carnegie Mellon Graduate Student Award! This award encourages and recognizes a graduate student who has advanced the interest of graduate students, improved the quality of life for graduate students on campus or contributed to a larger academic community.

  • Graduate students Kenneth Joseph, Binxuan Huang and Sumeet Kumar will all receive GuSH Research Grant Awards from Carnegie Mellon University. The goal of this funding is to enable more Carnegie Mellon graduate students to reach their full potential in their degree-related work. Kenneth received the award for his project titled 'Theory and Methods for Studying Identity with Text Analysis'; Binxuan received the award for his project titled 'Groundtruth for Multilingual Sentiment Classification'; and Sumeet received the award for his project titled 'Multimedia based Sentiment Analysis Dataset'.

  • Graduate student William Frankenstein accepts post-graduation employment with Deloitte Federal Strategy & Operations as a Senior Consultant. He will also be presenting this April at the 2016 Midwest Political Science Association Conference in Chicago, IL.
