How to Join CASOS

CASOS is a multi-disciplinary university wide center. Many graduate students throughout CMU are part of CASOS and take part in CASOS activities. To join CASOS as a Ph.D. student you need to:

  1. Be admitted to one of the following departments. Click on the name of a department to access information and application material. If you are not sure which department (or departments) to apply to either contact Kathleen M. Carley regarding COS and EPP, David Krackhardt regarding Heinz. Note on each and every application form and in a cover letter that you wish to be associated with CASOS.

    • Computation, Organizations and Society
    • Engineering and Public Policy
    • Heinz School of Public Policy and Management

  2. Ask to join the CASOS mailing list. After you have been admitted to CMU, send a second email to Dr. Kathleen M. Carley telling her that you have been admitted and to what program. At that point, you will be admitted to CASOS.

  3. Set up an appointment with casos[AT]cmu.edu to get your picture taken and registered into CASOS .
To get the CASOS certificate you should:
  1. Take these courses, either as electives or as requirements in your home department:

    • 08-810 Computational Modeling of Complex Socio-Technical Systems
    • 08-801 Dynamic Network Analysis

  2. Do research with any of the CASOS faculty in the dynamic network or agent based modeling area.

  3. Attend the CASOS Summer Institute.

  4. TA the CASOS Summer Institute.

  5. Apply for and receive the 3Rivers Network Science Certificate
