Overview

In the next five years, the way air traffic in the US is organized will change dramatically. NextGen is a new project that will make air travel be more predictable, more fuel-efficient, and safer. The CASOS team is modeling the communication flows between involved entities (aircrafts, radar stations, carriers, etc.) in the current system and has an eye on modeling the new NextGen sytem. All this will help to better predict and avoid bottlenecks in future communication structures.

What we will be doing:

  • Building a network model of the existing re-routing system and then the expected re-routing system under NextGen
  • Take a combined human and IT approach to understanding the bottlenecks the current system under normal (i.e., nothing is going wrong) scenario and under various "error" scenarios
  • Focus on the basic science of combining social network analysis with project management
